The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition is throwing a huge bike party this Sunday, and they need your help. Visit http://openstreetsmpls.com/ for more information, or keep reading.
OK, here are the details. Open Streets (or Ciclovia) is a kind of new thing to Minneapolis, but they do them all over the world. Basically what it is is that they shut down a major street to automobile traffic for a morning or afternoon or even all day and open the entire thing to bicycles, pedestrians. They'll have street vendors and stuff like that I think, too. I'm honestly not all that up on what they have planned, but I know it's going to be fun :)
They are putting out a call for a few more volunteers, though. The last I heard was this:
It sounds like we need more intersection monitors, and possibly also roving ambassadors. If I'm reading my e-mail right, shifts are 9:30-12:15 and 11:30-2:15. ... I think we're only 15 people shy of our optimum goal, so we just need a nudge to get there.
I'm not going to be able to volunteer because I'm taking a class on how to make sushi for the first couple of hours this is going on over in St. Paul at Tanpopo Restaurant. Otherwise I'd love to help out, it should be a fun time hanging out on Hennepin and talking with people about how great bicycles are.
Hopefully this gets a lot of people out of the house and out of their cars to come down and try biking, and hopefully they keep coming out after. That's the whole point of it, right?
Anyway, if you could help out, that would be awesome, otherwise if you can spread the word that they still need volunteers, that would be great. If you can't volunteer, you should at least try to get down and check it out, it should hopefully be a ton of people out on bicycles.
